Unblocking websites

Thumbnails by Thumbshots.orgI wrote a bit ago about unblocking websites when you are behind a firewall.  I had said that for the most part that you should probably just quit trying as there is a reason the people who run your network are blocking you.  Not a good one or one you may agree with but one none the less.  Now are there GOOD reasons to get around blocks such as this?  Yes.  Are they always effective? No. But the concepts are pretty sound.  While not a discussion of how to break the systems will show the strengths and weaknesses of each.  This should help a few parents and sys admins on securing their Internet access a little better.

Shortcuts and OpenDNS

Open DNS ShortcutsAs a follow up to my post on OpenDNS I decided to delve deeper into the feature of shortcuts. Shortcuts are as they are name quicker ways to get to your result. In this case it’s similar to a bookmark or favorite that has a keyword in your browser. However instead of the browser making the translation OpenDNS does it for you. Why would you care or want this? Because you can then use any browser on any computer on your network and it will just work.

Getting around MySpace(or any other site) block from School/Work/Home

BlockedSince I do a LOT of support and browse a lot of help and answer sites I’ve come across a LOt of people asking the following questions.

  • “How can I get to MySpace at school it’s blocked”
  • “I can’t surf to this site at work is  there something I can do?”
  • “My parents have blocked my internet can I fix it?”
  • “I can’t send mail they have blocked me from sending”

Now I have a few ways to do this but I never really answer how to do this (except the last one for my clients).  Why? I’ve got several reasons. Continue Reading Getting around MySpace(or any other site) block from School/Work/Home

Yes we have no bananas…

With ecommerce sites like Amazon, eBay and others boasting thousands if not millions of products. Would you shop at a store that only carried ONE random product and when the sold out they closed for the day? Where there are no preorders or backorders? One site on the internet is doing JUST this and is amazingly successful. Plus it’s kinda fun to shop at! Continue Reading Yes we have no bananas…

OpenDNS - Faster Better Stronger… Free!

DNS or Domain Name Service is something that when it works you never think about it and when it doesn’t can be EXTREMELY frustrating. I’ve found a great FREE service that gives you MORE for nothing than your ISP does when it comes to DNS.

Welcome to the Help Centers.

I know personally we all need a bit of help sometimes. I’ve been on the Internet for about 15 years and on the ‘web’ just a bit after it started. You might think I’m a millionaire by now but no I’ve been quietly working in the background helping others make money and be a success on the Internet.

Originally I was a tech and found that while the technology is confusing why how and when to use it was even more confusing to clients. To this end I would scour the Internet for various subjects some technical some financial and some just fun. Armed with that knowledge and a bit of luck have made more than one person a few dollars on the Internet.

So what have I learned? That you can NEVER know enough and you must adapt and change. The Internet has been around for decades and the web just a under two decades. But it’s still a vast opportunity rich place for hardworking unique people.

What this site will try to do is to bring articles, posts, and other things to light that can help you use the Internet to your advantage rather than have the Internet take you for a ride.

So stay tuned I’ve got a lot of information to give and have a few other columnists that are going to contribute.  And if you do have something to say please feel free to comment.
