Chat Clients in a Web 2.0 world

Years ago there people could send quick small messages from terminal to terminal and it was good.
Then they could send messages to groups of people
Then they could chat in groups together and it was good
Then you could chat with people using other chat progams and it was good.

On the Internet there are about a dozen sites that I visit daily.   In that list are some that I use and need up and running (need may be a strong word).  GMail, Google Adsense, Twitter.   But what happens when they are down?  Today IWantSandy.com is down.  Not sure why but it is.
