I found this over at Life Hacker and was immediately interested as I have 2 computer addicted kids. It lets you create protected accounts that have minimal effect on the computer system. In other words the kids can’t delete your documents in your work folder, change the background to something hideous and in general make it impossible to use your computer after they have used it.
Steady State is a free application for XP and Vista users that builds off of the security features in windows and brings them to the main stream. With a point-click you can restrict programs and even some settings in program from mischevious hands, entirely restore the computer to a previous state.
This is good because it allows you to give access to your computer to your kids and they really can’t mess things up. Also if you have a shared computer that you’re constantly having to reload or fix because others have changed things you can automatically restore the computer when it reboots.
This is also good for the person who has the relative who’s pretty much unsure of what to do with their computer. Set this up and they really can’t mess things up.
While this DOES help reduce security threats it does not replace content filters, virus scanners and a good firewall. This just keeps the configuration set. It’s a free download and a ’simple’ install.
