I installed Safari 3.1 for Windows and began to use it as my default browser. While it was a nice change of pace (simple interface, fast response) I began to see where it was a weaker browser than Firefox and even Internet Explorer(both the current versions and upcoming FF 3 and IE8). While it does have standards support, it is faster starting and it has a smaller memory footprint than Firefox the lack of add-ons made it simply frustrating at times. Where was my buttons to post to Del.Icio.Us or StumbleUpon? The fact that I didn’t have time to run and get a cup of coffee while my browser loaded or ended up with a memory hog of a GIG after an hour just doesn’t seem enough to satisfy my browsing needs.
I’m not going to abandon the browser it is great to fire up quick and the rounded buttons were nice to look at. However, with the standards support in both Firefox 3 and Internet Explorer 8 plus the plug-in/add on features I just can’t sell my soul to Apple’s Safari. Plus the fact that they had to skin Safari for Windows to look like an OSX app seems like a waste. Numerous times I found myself catching a glimpse of the standard Windows title bar right before the brushed metal appeared. I would also notice a few little ‘bugs’ in some sites but I chalked that more up to the sites themselves than problems with the browser (I’m a standards nut)
For the curious take a look at the Safari Browser for Windows. Not only is it a neat thing to try it’s a good idea as the market share for Apple computers grows.
