Tools round the house…

May 16th, 2008 · No Comments

Growing up my parents had that drawer in the kitchen.  You know the one, screwdrivers, hammers, nails, screws, tape.  Often called the ‘junk drawer’ it didn’t have any cooking or serving utensils but things you needed round the house.  I’ve put together a list of things that you should have in your utility drawer. Read More Below...

  • Screw drivers
    • Eyeglass screwdriver kit(often with a couple of screws) even if you don’t have glasses.  Guests or the occasional electronic devince will need it.
    • Smaller philips and standard screw drivers along with a couple larger ones.
  • A hammer is next on the list not neccessarily an expensive one but one that has a claw is probably the best.
  • A rubber mallet for banging on things you don’t want to dent with your hammer
  • A keyhole saw.  Good for small general purpose sawing.
  • Set of alan wrenches.  Many assemble yourself furniture kits use these and having a set can’t hurt.
  • Pliers
    • Regular Pliers
    • Needle nose pliers
    • Vice grip pliers
  • Electric Multimeter - Test batteries, outlets and extension cords.
  • Glues
    • Super Glue
    • Duco Cement (or something like it)
    • Rubber Cement
    • Elmers White Glue
  • Tape
    • Masking Tape
    • Transparent Tape
    • Duct Tape
    • Electrical Tape
  • String
  • Sewing kit
  • Adjustable Wrench - I have an old As Seen on TV wrench that works great!
  • Socket Wrench Set - Not a big one but with a few tools.
  • Assorted Hardware of various sizes you can often get a kit with a lot of things.
    • Nails
    • Screws
    • Bolts
    • Nuts
  • Utility Knife
  • Single edge Razor blades
  • Batteries
  • Flashlight
A LOT of these items can be found in your local dollar store and you can make a GREAT utility drawer for occassional quick fixes round the house.
But a word of caution.  KEEP IT NEAT!   If you let it get messy you won’t be able to find stuff, glue might open, string might knot and you could stick yourself with something sharp.
If you don’t have an extra drawer a dollar store container will do just fine!
So take a few minutes to gather what you have around the house, make a shopping list and create your utility drawer.   It can save some time and frustration later on!
