I recently had a bunch of trouble with a computer that would not update via windows update. No matter how hard I tried it would just download the update and poof die. There was no message outside of the sad sad failure. From the Windows update site OR from the Automatic updates. There was no love.
But I did my research and came up with a solution from Microsoft. From their knowledge base Updates are not installed successfully from Windows Update, from Microsoft Update, or by using Automatic Updates after you repair a Windows XP installation I found that there was a problem with a registered DLL. While they go into more detail all you need to do is stop the update service, register the dll and then restart the service. All was good after that a 2 minute fix!
