Keeping it simple for a side bar

February 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Thumbnail by ThumbshotsI don’t use the default layout for my Windows XP desktop.  First I have my startmenu/taskbar on the right of my screen.  This lets me see more running tasks as I work and seems to work faster for me.  I was also using Google Desktop for a sidebar but found that it too up way to many resources than I wanted it to.  So I began searching for a sidebar that used minimal resources, showed my gmail, twitter, and a few other tidbits of info.  After about a half a day of searching for something I found a solution

Klipfolio is a free application that lets easily place and monitor websites and RSS feeds with Klips. “If your browser can access it a Klip can monitor it.”  While it doesn’t seem like a lot if you think that most websites have RSS feeds (e.g. digg, flickr, twitter, gmail) or at least HTML the Klips (the count is currently over 4,000)  can give almost anyone the view of the internet and data that they want.

An incorrect assumtion is that this is just a widget engine.  Much like Google Desktop, Yahoo Widgets, Desktop Sidebar or even the Vista Sidebar.  But Klipfolio is much less and more.  Less in that things such as an analog clock, puzzle games, actually almost anything that would require some advanced GUI tools and interaction is just not there.  HOWEVER with the removal of that functionality an easy to configure, small fast dashboard application is what is left.

So back to my original problem.  Small, fast and Informative is what I wanted and what I got.  YEAH! A FEW little problems.

  • No Analog clock.   OK yeah I know.  Seems stupid but I like a good analog clock.  Makes my day seem longer and time moves smoother.
  • Infrequent crashes.  Not to bothersome but does happen
  • Display messes up.  Sometimes things appear at strange places on the screen or things are munged together.

In spite of these problems I’ve been VERY pleased with Klipfolio and will probably use it for another few months before switching AGAIN.
