Every day, several times a day, I open up the same application, login to the same server, type the same thing,  OVER AND OVER again.  I past text I’ve copied from websites into editors only to have the formatting from the website cause problems.    It seems that I might have a LOT of issues with this but most of these have been solved by a program called AutoHotKey.Read More Below...

AutoHotKey is the FREE (yes free) Windows hot key, macro, script, record, and pretty much tame your Windows experience.  Granted creating more complex scripts is a bit geeky but there  is well written documentation and an EXTREMELY active support forum.

Scripts can be as simple as when you press Win-B open my web browser to pressing Win-V will past the text contents of the clipboard without any formatting, to creating a bosskey to hide windows you don’t want others to see.

You can even take your scripts and compile them into exe’s that you can run on their own.

The program has been in development since 2003 and has had numerous releases over the past few years.  While many Freeware applications can seem to lag  after awhile AutoHotKey and its community flourish.

A few examples of what I use AutoHotKey for are

• Open a SSH Session to A server and log on
• Send a Tweet
• Open a blank email to send to someone
• Insert text I use repeatedly in an email.
• Open a command line
• Open my Downloads folder.
•  And much much more…

While some may be intimidated by the scripts themselves, the numerous samples, documentation and forum posts can help you solve almost anything.  The install is EXTREMELY clean and simple and takes up almost no memory and CPU.
