Holiday Batteries

December 2nd, 2007 · No Comments

Battery Recycling(to the tune of Silver Bells)
Blinking flashlights,
R/C motorbikes,
Hand held gaming machines.
All running on those small cylinders.

Energizer,
Duracell
Even Raovack in demand.
By all the gifts that have been given this year.

Batteries,  Batteries…
I’m all out of batteries…
Toys don’t run… things don’t hum…  Even the dolly won’t play!

Much apologies… but at this time of year one of the most important parts of many gifts is overlooked and forgotten.   Here are a few things to remember about batteries.

  • Get the right type - Often people will go and grab the first package that they can see.  While this works many times there are some devices that need a specific kind of battery.    For example a wireless thermometer needed a non-alkaline battery for the remote I double checked this and using a bad battery could cause problems.  Most devices are ok with a normal alkaline battery.  However for some  products the high end batteries will last longer.   Personally I like the rechargeable however while they do save money they tend to need to be recharged more often than non rechargeable batteries need to be changed. Also NEVER USE RECHARGEABLE BATTERIES IN SMOKE ALARMS!
  • Charge with the right charger - DOUBLE CHECK that you are charging RECHARGEABLE batteries in the charger and that the charger is designed for the batteries.  Charging a NiCd battery in  NiMH charger can be problematic to say the least.
  • Get enough - I’ve had a gift given from someone with the foresight to attach a package of batteries.  VERY thoughtful except they gave a 4 pack and the device needed 6.   Try and get double for the kids devices.   You can usually get a GREAT deal at warehouse stores.  You know you’ll need them eventually.  For rechargeable batteries have one set in the charger another in the device and if possible a third that is fully charged waiting on the side.
  • Cool your Batteries - Yep keeping batteries them in a cool dry place will help them keep longer.  HOWEVER putting them in the freezer only really works for rechargeable batteries.  Plus a frozen battery won’t work until it thaws.
  • Unplug chargers -  Some battery chargers will continue to suck power even when not charging batteries so unplug when not in use.
  • Check for damage - A damaged battery can leak and cause at least damage to the device and at worse fire or poisoning.  Don’t open smash  or chew batteries.
  • Dispose of properly -  We all know not to throw a battery in the fire but the trash can be bad also.  Check your local recycling center or Earth 911 for info on where you can take old batteries.  You’ll not only help reduce costs but also keep the environment clean.

I hope these tips keep you ‘charged up’ this holiday season. (Sorry bout that couldn’t resist)
