Remember the old piggy banks that you had use a butter knife and jiggle or SMASH in order to get out the money? How you would try and remember how much is in there? I’ve tried to use the jar to hold my spare pocket change but with kids my jar usually remains empty even AFTER a week of putting my change in. I have an inexpensive and secure way of saving without ‘breaking the bank’.Read More Below...

You need to get an ordinary UNOPENED tin can. It has to be one that opens with a can opener. The easy pop-tops won’t work. The size of the can is not important but as large as you want. Then get a can opener that cuts the SIDE of the can like there are a BUNCH of them out there this one or this one and even Electric Ones. These keep your food and opener cleaner as they cut the OUTSIDE of the can and allow you to ‘reseal’ the can by simply laying the lid back on. Ok now what to do.

  • Open the can and clean it out (THIS IS IMPORTANT).
  • Using an VERY strong glue (Crazy glue, epoxy etc.) glue the lid on let it dry.
  • Then cut a slot to add the money I recommend using the opposite end from what you cut off as it will be stronger.

You now have a great bank that can’t be opened without a can opener. Not Fort Knox but will prevent the tempting quick grab the cash and run. You can even make a bunch of them, decorate and paint them.  A great kids project cut the slot BEFORE.  You could also use these for fund raising cans in a public place. Simple and secure.
